How to Prepare for a Video Interview

Whether you're appearing in a corporate video, a promotional piece, a documentary, or a recruitment spotlight, being the subject of a video interview can feel intimidating—especially if it’s your first time. But with a little preparation, you can come across as confident, authentic, and professional. Here are some essential tips to help you prepare for your video interview and make the most of your moment on camera.

1. Know the Purpose

Before anything else, understand the intent of the video. Is it meant to inform, inspire, promote, or persuade? Being aware of the end use of the video enables you to structure your answers. Ask the production team for context, the intended audience, and how the video will be used. This clarity helps guide your tone, energy, and message.

2. Prepare Key Talking Points

Rather than memorizing scripts, think in terms of natural conversation. It is a good idea to write down 3–5 key points you want to deliver during the interview. The best interviews feel authentic, not rehearsed. Also, think about possible questions ahead of time so you're not caught off guard.

3. Dress for the Camera

Choose solid, neutral colors and avoid busy patterns, logos, or stripes that can be distracting on camera. Dress in a way that matches the tone of the video—business casual for professional pieces, or more relaxed attire if the video is informal. If you're unsure, ask the producer for wardrobe guidelines.

4. Be Mindful of Body Language

Posture, facial expressions, and gestures matter just as much as what you say. Sit or stand comfortably upright, maintain good eye contact (typically with the interviewer, not the camera), and smile naturally. Avoid fidgeting, crossing your arms, or looking off-camera unless directed to do so.

5. Speak Clearly and Be Yourself

Maintain a steady pace that isn’t rushed, and use your normal tone of voice. It’s okay to pause and think before answering. Don’t worry about being perfect—authenticity resonates far more than polished sound bites. The camera captures not just your words but your personality, so let that shine through.

6. Trust the Production Team

Finally, remember you're not alone. A good video crew will guide you through the process, help you feel comfortable, and ensure you look and sound your best. If you're unsure about anything—lighting, sound, where to look—just ask. They're there to help you succeed.

In Summary

Preparing for a video interview doesn’t have to be stressful. With a little foresight and a relaxed mindset, you can make a strong, memorable impression. Understand the message, focus on clear communication, and let your authentic self come through. That’s what makes for great video content.
